Issue-Specific Therapy
How it Works
Issue-specific therapy (also known as time-limited, short-term, or intensive therapy) is tailored to address a specific, current challenge faced by an individual or couple. It is goal-oriented and focused on practical planning to address a present challenge. It typically lasts about 6 sessions but can be fewer.
Issue-specific therapy is ideal for developing plans, such as strategies for improved self-care, better communication, and approaches to work or family conflicts. It is also great for learning concrete skills such as boundary setting, fair fighting, or anxiety reduction. It is not appropriate for addressing trauma.
If you are considering issue-specific therapy, your initial intake session will be spent, in part, determining whether short-term intervention is appropriate for your goals.
